Why is it important?

Obesity and Diabetes are two linked metabolic disorders that are reaching pandemic proportions. Despite the best effort, no treatment or therapy seems to be able to prevent or treat these disorders with a sufficiently high adherence and succes rate. The costs of the health epidemic to patients and healthcare systems worldwide is huge, a better understanding of the disease mechanism and the possibility to target it on several levels might provide a positive worldwide health outcome.

Perspectives

The pharmacological targeting of TRPM5 could provide a preventive of curative therapy for type II diabetes, furthermore, it can reduce caloric intake and thereby reducing obesity, a dangerous comorbidity.
