What is it about?

Prior to the establishment of this registry, living donor outcomes was only tracked by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network for about twenty years following the surgery. The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients was asked to establish a living donor registry in order to better track the 50-60 year outcomes of living donors.

Why is it important?

As the waiting list for kidneys continues to grow, living donors have become an important source of health kidneys. However, in order to ensure the safety of the donor, it is important to qualitatively identify any impact that donation could have on the life of a donor. By establishing this registry, the aim is to do track donor outcomes for essentially the remainder of the donors lives.
