What is it about?

We assessed if the use of L-arginine dietary supplements in people with higher level of daily physical activity influences some properties of saliva in a way that could, potentially, reduce the risk of developing tooth decay.

Why is it important?

The use of L-arginine dietary supplements is promoted due to their potential beneficial effects on the circulatory system, the muscles, etc. In this study we explored possible "oral side effects" of taking L-arginine supplements which could be regarded as protective, especially for sportspeople as they are considered to be under a particular risk of acid-mediated pathological tooth wear due to their active life and nutritive habits.

Perspectives

Our study encourages the inclusion of the measurements of oral/salivary effects of L-arginine consumption as an additional (secondary) part of the studies that investigate potential preventive and therapeutic (non-oral) primary effects of these dietary supplements.
