What is it about?

We investigated whether menus from privately-owned and community daycare centres met the dietary guidelines for quality, quantity and variety of foods provided.

Why is it important?

Young children are in daycare centres (on average) for more than 20 hours a week, most weeks of the year. This is a good opportunity for them to learn healthy food behaviours and be offered foods that help them grow, learn and develop to their full potential.

Perspectives

This is the third in a series of publications using data collected from childcare centres in New Zealand, and is part of a PhD looking at the potential of early childhood education services to assist with obesity prevention.
