Should Europeans confine their security efforts to their immediate geographical neighbourhood or should they aspire to play a broader, more global strategic role, including in and around Asia? To what extent, if at all, are these two objectives compatible?

Why is it important?

It points to the importance of the 'middle spaces' of the Indian Ocean, central Asia and the Arctic, in that they constitute the main avenues of communication between the Asia–Pacific region and the European neighbourhood. It challenges us to think about how geopolitical dynamics in Europe, the 'middle spaces' and the Asia-Pacific relate to each other, and what that means for the transatlantic relationship.
