What is it about?
Research suggests that young people who continue to struggle with reading, may read less than other students of the same age and feel less positive about it. In this study, young people with some reading difficulties took part in a five-session programme aimed at exploring their feelings about reading and promoting reading motivation and engagement. Results were mixed and suggest that different factors encourage or discourage reading. More research is needed in this area, particularly with the teenagers who find reading most difficult.

Perspectives
Teenagers struggling with reading is something high school educators will be familiar with. Given the effect of reading difficulties on life chances, it is something which could be much more widely-researched and given a lot more attention. We hope this paper will hope promote thinking about creative ways to support older students who struggle with reading
