What is it about?

Nursing directors of small hospitals were more prone to burnout than nursing directors of large hospitals. However, burnout was not due to facility size or individual characteristics, but to the work environment, including organizational justice and the support received within the hospital.

Why is it important?

Fewer studies have been conducted on nursing directors than on nursing staff and ward nurse managers. This study is valuable in that it identifies factor contributing to the mental health of nursing directors.

Perspectives

Some systematic reviews have shown that nursing manager leadership is associated with good patient outcomes and nursing staff wellbeing. Creating an empowring environment for nursing directors is important for the well-being of both patients and nursing staff.
