What is it about?

Editorial about the importance of mitochondrial dynamics in muscle physiology and adaptation to new conditions. This editorial describes recent discoveries about the importance of mitochondrial dynamics, turnover and maintenance in the activity of skeletal muscle. The balance between the generation of new mitochondrial structures together with the regulation of the dynamics of mitochondria playing between fused and active structures and fissioned and inactive structures must be controled to avoid the accumulation of damaged mitochondria associated with many diseases including metabolic syndrome or other age-related diseases.

Why is it important?

The health of mitochondria in muscle but also in the other organs and tissues is essential to maintain a good muscle physiology along aging and to prevent frailty during aging.


Aging is being an important issue for humans. During aging, many physiological functions suffer unbalance being mitochondria an essential factor. For muscle, mitochondrial activity is important to maintain its capacity and prevent frailty. Mitochondrial health is very importan in the maintenance of healthy aging and independence at the oldest ages.
