What is it about?

Plague reservoirs over the world- an extensive review of the keystone vertebrate reservoirs, geographic location, and the requirements for plague survival in its quiescent phase.

Why is it important?

Who is to blame for plague outbreaks, either for keeping the causative bacterium (Yersinia pestis) alive or amplifying it to make its spread feasible in a given area? Apart from the several bio/abiotic factors (vectors, climate, soil, etc.), reservoirs are always of utmost importance in any zoonosis surveillance system. Taking into account the geographic location of the infection and taxonomic remarks on the species, we have presented a comprehensive list of such significant vertebrate plague reservoirs throughout the world in this exhaustive research. We must care deeply about taxonomy, and its incorporation into public health disciplines, like so many others, appears to be unavoidable.
