What is it about?

A closed form accurate and unique expression of directivity for planar antenna arrays is proposed. This summarizes all the previously made attempts which were based on special element pattern.

Why is it important?

Directivity is one of the key figure of merit of the array design. Evaluation of it is necessary but memory and time consumption the major resources required while dealing with complex geometries. A general and unified directivity expression is proposed for planar arrays that is independent on the array geometry in terms of element positioning and excitations. The results are accurate and instantaneous.

Perspectives

This unique and accurate expression determines the directivity for all possible element positioning and excitations as long as planar arrays are concerned. Pattern sampling is not required, and hence, all the calculations are done with minimal resource requirements.
