What is it about?

This magazine article introduces a new signal processing methodology which can be executed at very high frequencies with significantly reduced computational load. This is vital for future IoT applications.

Why is it important?

The Prism is a novel finite impulse response (FIR) filter, which is fully recursive: the computational cost per sample is low and independent of the filter window length. Potential applications may be found in a wide range of IoT (and, indeed, conventional) fields such as industrial automation, transportation, healthcare, electrical power, condition and environmental (e.g., gas sensing) monitoring, and the smart home.

Perspectives

One of the first "real" applications of Prism has been to fuel injection monitoring in Diesel engines, an aspect of the project that I led. This has huge potential for future increases in efficiency and reductions in emissions.
