What is it about?
Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) enable synthesis of high-resolution terrain images on the basis of radar signals transmitted and received from a moving platform (aircraft, UAV, satellite). This paper addresses the system installed on a mini UAV elaborated in the frame of a project called WATSAR. The paper presents real SAR images obtained during in-flight tests of the system.

Why is it important?
Eleboration of Synthetic Aperture Radars (SAR) for small platform like mini UAV is still a chalanging task and such systems are rather rare. Our paper presents a system that works and is capable of creating good-quality SAR images (included in the paper). It can be a valuable IMINT tool for the military and a versatile tool for terrain observation in the civilian context.
