What is it about?
We present a flexible ultrasonic motor that generates linear and rotary motion, as a novel soft actuator. This motor, wihch is a type of piezoelectric motor, is comprised of a single cube stator with a through-hole, and a flexible and slender coil spring inserted into the hole. The coil spring is actuated by vibration generated in the stator.

Why is it important?
Unlike traditional soft actuators, the motor can generate large stroke. For example, the long coil spring provides a large traveling distance as long as it does not buckle.
Perspectives
This actuator leads to efficient movement of a slender machine (ex. endoscope robot and snake robot) in confined spaces by generating large stroke.

Flexible Ultrasonic Motor
Soft actuators, wihch are inspired by natural muscle, have many potential advantages such as resistance to mechanical damage and inherent compliance. However, their deployment have been restricted by the lack of a soft electrically driven motor that can generate large stroke. We have developed a flexible ultrasonic motor, which is a class of piezoelectric actuator. This motor with an elastic coil spring slider can rotate and translate the slider. Also, the translation stroke (travelling distance) is designed to be almost the same as the length of the coil spring.
