What is it about?
As healthcare organizations are being pressured for quality and efficiency improvements, and with the continued growth in scientific knowledge and business insights generated, it has become crucially important to properly identifying and managing knowledge risks in medical practices. We develop the first ever taxonomy of knowledge risks in healthcare organizations, covering human, technology and operational perspectives, discuss how they could manifest and elaborate on their negative impacts.

Why is it important?
We identified risks that are likely to emerge in the day-to-day operations in healthcare organizations, related to dealing with the immoderate amount of knowledge and data curated and exchanged, which has increased exponentially over the last decade. Knowledge acquisition, management and application is becoming a crucial part of the daily operations and strategies of hospitals and medical centres. Yet, an abundance of caution is required to ensure that knowledge is adequately transformed into a competitive advantage rather than becoming a risk factor, endangering the sustainability of healthcare organizations.
Perspectives
In writing this article, I was able to utilize my previous experience as a medical doctor and healthcare manager into developing a practical framework, wearing my academic researcher hat. I believe the propositions included in this article have important applications in most healthcare settings.
