What is it about?

This is the first volume in a book series on Advances in Research Ethics and Integrity. The aim is to offer up to date practical information on current issues in research ethics and on problems associated with scientific integrity. The series grew out of a series of seminars run by a Working Group of the UK Academy of Social Sciences to explore what is common in terms of research ethics principles and values across the learned societies that make up the Academy.

Why is it important?

It's important because it deals with enduring issues and up-to-date potential 'solutions' to some of the ethical problems confronting researchers. It should help anticipate some of the difficulties that may be confronted 'in the field' and avoid serious harms coming to researches and research subjects alike. At the same time it will help maintain standards and quality in social science.

Perspectives

There is a personal mission in this book and in the series. It has to do with how foundational work is lost or ignored and how difficult it is for disciplines to share some basic ethical principles since they are so protective of their professional 'territory'. Institutional pressures such as these should never obstruct good work and good science from being conducted.
