Why is it important?
It's important to show what the fundamental assumptions of ethical research practice are across the various disciplines that comprise the social sciences. While there are nuanced variations between the disciplines, the core concerns are the same and are part of what maintains the quality, standards, reliability and trust that both the public and policymakers can have of the work that social scientists do.
Perspectives
Both the symposia and this outcome discussion document was seen as important to maintain a common front about the integrity of the social sciences. Some of us had been working toward this for many years and were please that we managed to achieve this degree of consensus. The social sciences are vital to the maintenance of a free, open and democratic society in terms of ensuring reliable evidence for views, policies and practices across the public domain.
