Theory suggests that innovative staff are difficult to retain, particularly when they are studying to improve their qualifications. This is because they may soon be able to take advantage of new opportunities in the labour market. We derive a context-specific theoretical model of retention for this particular cohort of employees. In testing this model we derive novel insights into how to improve retention in an important developing country context.
