What is it about?
Our study provides police leaders with insights on what types of leadership behaviours motivate or demotivate employees. This knowledge can help improve job engagement and performance while reducing emotional exhaustion and burnout within police organizations. At the organizational level, senior police leaders and the police organization can create better conditions that allow supervisors to display motivating leadership behaviors based on the identified factors. The key factors that contribute to motivating leadership are support, trust, and safety in relation to senior managers and colleagues, as well as autonomy, a good “fit” with the role or assignment, and motivation. On the other hand, factors that hinder motivating leadership include organizational complexity, a disengaged senior supervisor, and high workload. Disengaging leadership behaviours are often linked to a culture of fear and an authoritarian senior manager, which fits the category of coercive leadership behavior (Nikolova and Schaufeli, 2021). Self-awareness is seen as helping to reduce disengaging leadership behaviours.
