What is it about?
How do alternate reality games work? To answer this question one must look at the type of information these games generate. This article analyses three ARGs and then develops a conceptual framework to explain how ARGs function. The framework will enable people to effectively analyse ARGs as well as design their own.

Why is it important?
The way the conceptual framework was developed made use of various methodologies such as multiple case studies, components of grounded theory and micro analysis. The framework the study presents is also unique as it attempts to abstractly present ARGs and its various components/phenomena.
Perspectives
The conceptual framework is a unique representation of ARGs based on the game studies discipline and existing game design theory. The framework will definitely assist others in designing their own ARGs or ARG-like experiences.
