Why is it important?

Understanding the characteristics of the workplace that can promote motivation is important because it can help employers to develop good workplaces. The paper also offers a validated measure to assess the workplace characteristics as experienced by individuals.

Perspectives

This paper offers the new concept of workplace design and a novel perspective to understanding workplaces. Motivation (and by extension well-being and performance) does not reside in the individual only and is not simply about the job itself. Rather, it also comes from aspects of the workplace that can promote or inhibit it.
