This study examines the social networks of Portuguese self-initiated expatriates (SIEs), in terms of composition, diversity and roles.

Why is it important?
This study helps understand what shapes the formation of social networks among (Portuguese) self-initiated expatriates which is influential since these professionals are known for their self-directiveness when going abroad and less is known about how do they do it.
Perspectives
In doing this research we found that Portuguese self-initiated expatriates had home networks that fade over time, and host networks which were mainly work driven. Contrary to our expectations, the surveyed Portuguese self-initiated expatriates purposefully sough “fellow nationals” from a similar social status and background to get feedback and emotional support, while deliberately ignored the large Portuguese diaspora. We believe this approach might limit their social networks in the short time and undermine their cultural and political influence at the destination over the long term.
