Strategic resilience in healthcare: towards a digitalised and regenerative balanced scorecard framework

What is it about?

Hospitals face increasing pressure to remain effective during crises while also responding to digital transformation and sustainability demands. This study shows how hospital performance systems can be redesigned to support these challenges. By analysing three Portuguese hospitals, the research demonstrates how combining digital tools, sustainability goals, and staff well-being within a single performance framework can improve decision-making, coordination, and organisational resilience. The study introduces a regenerative and digital Balanced Scorecard that helps hospital leaders move beyond short-term efficiency targets toward long-term resilience, transparency, and social responsibility. The framework supports the use of real-time information to anticipate risks, manage resources more effectively, and strengthen trust with staff, patients, and communities. Overall, the findings suggest that hospitals can use digitally enabled and sustainability-oriented performance systems to better prepare for crises while improving the quality and accountability of healthcare delivery.
