What is it about?

This research paper introduces an inexpensive and effective quality management initiative for improving patient care. Using an action research study, this initiative was implemented over 12 months in a private healthcare firm for vulnerable adults. Research findings showed an improvement in patient decision making, patient activities and increased confidence in their self advocacy.

Why is it important?

The initiative outlined in this paper is especially important in the context of budget constraints and the current quality crisis facing the UK. Results from this study could be replicated in other healthcare contexts in which there is wide commitment to the initiative and where managers adopt a democratic style of leadership. The quality initiative introduced in this paper could enable healthcare managers ameliorate their services with little or no extra cost.

Perspectives

The quality initiative introduced in this paper was part of a wider action research study involving a new healthcare model I devised named EALIM - Ethical, Adaptive, Learning and Improvement Model.
