What is it about?

Handover during out of hours work is important to keep health services safe. The mental Health Services ranked towards the bottom in annual PMETB/GMC surveys of trainee doctors on the issue of Handover Practices. A project was setup to formalise handover practices in NTW NHS Foundation Trust. As a result the NTW NHS Foundation Trust stopped beeing a negative outlier on the issue of Handover in annual GMC survey of trainee doctors. The paper describes how this was achived.

Why is it important?

This publication describes the process of setting up a standard operating procedure for Handover out of hours by trainee doctors and making it work. we can have many standard operating procedures but they are of no use of they are not followed. The paper describes the success storey of making regular handover out of hours in a mental health organisation by trainee doctrors a reality. This may give suggestions to other organisations who are struggling to achive this.
