What is it about?

This research examines cultural differences in recipients’ attitudes and behaviors throughout all three stages in Sherry’s (1983) gift-giving model and investigates the effects of relationship closeness on the gift-giving process between Thais and Americans. We show that Thais (interdependent self-construals) tend to give a hint or make a request for a gift to their close friends than their distant friends. They also tend to accept and use the gift from close friends than distant friends. Americans (independent self-construals), however, do not present any differences between close and distant friends.
