What is it about?

The aim of this article is to contribute to the debate on university-industry knowledge transfer and on the changing organization of knowledge creation activities. It argues that the choice of how to govern the relationship between university and industry in the context of knowledge transfer processes, depends to some extent on properties of the knowledge involved, particularly its complexity and its appropriability.

Why is it important?

The article helps to explain what forms of governance of university-industry knowledge transfer processes are more appropriate in different circumstances. For this reason, it develops theoretical knowledge that can underpin management choices on the part of academics, businesses, and university technology transfer offices.

Perspectives

I wrote this article during my PhD studies. While reading the economic literature on knowledge production and knowledge transfer, it occurred to me that the economic properties of knowledge can provide economic rationales for the choice of different forms of governance of the relationship between university and industry. I tested this framework with a small dataset I had constructed ad hoc. It would be interesting to test it with a larger dataset and a more complex empirical model.
