This study reveals that people tend to justify the hazing of new employees in their workplaces. These justifications are the result of characteristics of the group using the hazing and the people observing the hazing.

Why is it important?

Workplace hazing happens to 25-75% of employees, but very few researchers or managers seem to be paying attention to it, except when a workplace sees an example of terrible, severe hazing. This research indicates people tend to see hazing as justified and legitimate, which can explain the inattention it receives and the likelihood hazing can escalate into something egregious without someone interrupting it.
