What is it about?

Organizations have to continually invest in their employees because they are the most important organizational asset in today's competitive environment. This study explored the complex relationships between employees' training orientation, organizational support for training, perceived value of training, employees' training satisfaction, and affective commitment..

Why is it important?

Our findings showed that employees' training orientation including their general attitude towards training and training goal orientation influenced training satisfaction directly and indirectly through perceived value of training. Additionally, organizational support for training influenced training satisfaction indirectly through perceived value of training. Training satisfaction had a positive effect on affective commitment. Thus, organizations should find ways to shape employees' positive attitude towards training and to show support for providing meaningful and well-organized training programs.

Perspectives

The extant literature is focused on the consequences of training satisfaction. This paper is one of the first empirical studies investigating whether and how a personal factor (i.e. training orientation) and an organizational factor (i.e. organizational support for training) influence employees' training satisfaction directly and indirectly through perceived value of training among Chinese employees in the service sector. We hope that other researchers may replicate this study in other countries and different sectors.
