What is it about?
SMEs represent an important part of the generation of jobs and income in Brazil. Initiatives that lead to the successful implementation of tools and practices to support KM can increase the efficiency and productivity of these organizations.

Why is it important?
The study points out the need for greater dissemination of practices and tools to support knowledge management (KM), as well as greater support for the implementation and effective use of these practices and tools within the organizational context of SMEs.
Perspectives
Collaborating for the construction of this article allowed me to learn from researchers recognized in the community, in addition the learning in the review stage of the Journal of Knowledge Management was invaluable. Small and medium-sized companies inserted in the knowledge economy play an important role for the development and economic growth of countries and the appropriate use of knowledge management systems contributes to the creation of new knowledge and innovation, providing competitiveness and effectiveness for small and medium-sized companies.
