What is it about?

How is it possible to successfully transition to fully online teaching and learning at a Ukrainian university, during the dual crises of the pandemic and full-scale Russian invasion? At Taurida National University’s Institute of Philology and Journalism we found that the sudden – then ongoing – transition to fully online teaching and learning demanded the technical resources and skills of all students and staff, as well as staff leading initial risk assessment and problem-solving. However, the transition also ultimately enhanced transparency and democracy within the Institute community, and strengthened the mutual bonds between technology and pedagogy.

Why is it important?

Our case study demonstrates that a successful exit from the educational crisis of the pandemic and war via the transition to full distant learning depends on three interconnected factors: - the appropriate choice and quality of technological tools - the flexibility and graduality of the implementation processes - the successful combination of teaching new digital skills with care for psychological comfort and harmony within the educational community.

Perspectives

This article is a story of survival and the attempt to develop one of the displaced Ukrainian universities as a result of the war of Russia against Ukraine. I hope the description of this experience will be useful as an example of making contemporary technologies the successful instrument for overcoming an educational crisis. Taking into account saving teachers’ and students’ unity in case face-to-face learning is unavailable and the university management gets confused. As our case demonstrates, efficient crisis management efforts should be aimed both at achieving “key performance indicators” and at such simple things as psychological well-being and mutual support within the educational community.
