What is it about?

Difficult coworkers are the ones who exhibit negative and problematic work-related and interpersonal behaviors. They trigger their peers' negative attitude toward them and, in turn, may cause employees' turnover intention. This study examines whether and how perceived organizational support can buffer the negative effect of attitude toward difficult coworkers on turnover intention.

Why is it important?

Our findings suggest that perceived organizational support and affective commitment are able to mediate the relationship between attitude toward difficult coworkers and turnover intention. Thus, organizations must (1) implement human resources management practices such as providing interpersonal training to all employees, (2) establish feedback systems to identify difficult coworkers in workplaces, (3) develop formal mechanisms to deal with difficult coworkers, and (4) ensure that employees realize the organization valuing their contributions and caring about their well-being and opinions.

Perspectives

Difficult coworkers can be found in almost all workplaces. I hope this article raises people's awareness about difficult coworkers and how organizations can mitigate their negative effects on other workers.
