What is it about?

TiPO4 undergoes upon cooling a phase transition towards an incommensurate phase (T = 112 K) and then towards a a spin-Peierls distortion with a dimerization of the Ti chains (T = 75 K).

Why is it important?

While the nature of the phase transition at T = 112 K is of second order, the lock-in transition at T = 75 K is of weak first order.
