Phase transition and thermodynamical properties of ZrO2 ceramics are closely analyzed by theoretical calculations that incorporate the effect of lattice vibration (phonon) at finite temperature.

Why is it important?
Zirconia (ZrO2) is a representative structural ceramic material with excellent hardness and toughness. Control of phase transition behavior is critically important for strengthen mechanism of the material (known as partially stabilized zirconia, PSZ or YSZ). Morphotropic phase transition in fluorite-structure is also important for electrical properties of recently topical (Hf,Zr)O2 ferroelectric materials which are utilized in new type transistor devices (FE-FETs).
