What is it about?

In this article, we present the first detailed numerical simulation of the mechanical and damping behaviour of dragonfly wing veins. Using a series of finite element models we show how the complex microstructure of the veins may contribute to the unique mechanical properties of the wings. Considering the dynamic stability of insect wings and their capacity to withstand high mechanical stresses in flight, the results of this study might help researchers to design more durable bioinspired composite structures.
