What is it about?

Humanized immunodeficient mice (NOG mice) were infected with EB virus, which only infects humans and New World monkeys, and succeeded in causing changes similar to rheumatoid arthritis joint destruction. Osteoclasts activated in this EB virus-infected humanized NOG mouse model were of human origin.

Why is it important?

Using this mouse model, we have demonstrated for the first time that EB virus is the cause of rheumatoid arthritis, which was previously suspected. Furthermore, this is the first report of activation of human osteoclasts in a mouse model.

Perspectives

Further examination of this mouse model will make it possible to elucidate some of the causes of rheumatoid arthritis, an intractable disease. By clarifying the cause, it will be possible to develop a curative treatment.
