What is it about?

The study investigated the relationship between homocysteinemia blood levels and efficacy of the rehabilitation in persons affected by lower limb amputation due to peripheral arterial disease.

Why is it important?

The higher the level of homocysteinemia the worse the functional outcome. We didn't find this significant correlation in persons affected by amputation caused by a traumatic injury or neoplastic disease.

Perspectives

Because an high level of homocysteinemia could be a possible marker in dysvascular disease and a possible risk factor of amputation, we recommend to test the blood level of this protein. This is a simple and inexpensive test. If necessary we also recommend the drug treatment (folate and B vitamins).
