What is it about?

Redundancy is usually thought of as 'waste" resulting from inefficient operations. The traditional focus in operations management is on elimination of redundancy. This phenomenon has similarly observed in the healthcare industry, where patients' needs rarely converge. However, contrary to common wisdom, our research found that redundancy has a positive impact on patient-centeredness, patient safety and quality of care.

Research suggests that health care operations decision makers and chiefs of hospitals need to reexamine their current approach and management practices on redundancy. A strong risk perception is prevalent in the healthcare settings.
