What is it about?

This paper highlights a community-engaged process of developing a health priorities survey in one tribal community. We highlight a process, lessons learned, and real-life examples that can help survey developers and community health advocates ask the right questions, through community-engaged partnerships.

Why is it important?

Documenting community health needs is a first step in public health and addressing health disparities. This is important because so many surveys ask the wrong questions. If we ask the wrong questions, we will never really know what needs to be addressed and why. Our process outlines how to engage communities in the survey development process and why it is important.

Perspectives

This was an amazing process. Learning from community members about what a community health survey should look like was priceless. Ultimately, this process led to an improved community health survey and a process for others to follow.
