What is it about?

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), often seen in cancer metastasis, is required for conceptus implantation to the maternal endometrium. We have shown for the first time that transcription factor OVOL2 is involved in the regulation of EMT events when conceptuses adhere to the endometrium.

Why is it important?

It was thought that EMT occurs before conceptus attachment to the endometrial epithelium. We have demonstrated that EMT occurs after the initial conceptus attachment to the endometrium and down-regulation of OVLO2 contributes to EMT to proceed.

Perspectives

I hope this article proves that regardless of trophoblast invasiveness or mammalian species, trophoblasts require EMT for their implantation to the maternal endometrium. I also hope that this article enhances the first author's visibility, resulting in finding of an appropriate position for her to continue excellent researches.
