What is it about?

As part of the Oxford Bibliographies in American Literature, the entry Bernard Malamud is an extensive annotated bibliography of critical sources (listing over 150 items including monographs, articles, book chapters) about this American Jewish fiction writer, ranging from the 1950s to 2020, and organized by theme, subject matter, or specific novel / short story collection. Like the rest of the OBAL, this is an online repository which is updated regularly with new publications.

Why is it important?

Each bibliographical entry contains a one-paragraph summary describing the scope, approach and methodology followed by the critic, thus becoming a very effective tool in guiding new scholars or readers beginning research on Bernard Malamud towards the materials that will be most useful to them. On the left hand side of the screen, several scrollable headings for the sections into which the body of Malamud sources is organized (i.e., Women in Malamud / Italian stories / specific novels) enable a very rapid access to all entries depending on the researchers' interests.

Perspectives

This is a must for younger and beginning Malamud scholars, saving you a great amount of time when navigating the vast body of Bernard Malamud scholarship from the 1950s to 2020.
