Perspectives

The importance of interpersonal relationships to patient safety has not received as much attention as other topics. The study found that when health care professionals experienced better collaboration and respect in the workplace, they reported that the patient safety climate also tended to be better. In contrast, when health care professionals experienced interprofessional conflict, the patient safety climate appeared to suffer. Our results suggest that workplace efforts to improve collaboration and reduce conflict among health care professionals, such as the Ottawa Hospital Interprofessional Model of Patient Care, could also help improve the patient safety climate in hospitals.
