What is it about?

We measured fibrin clot permeability (Ks) a measure of the pore size in fibrin network of clot During follow up of 4.3 years, patients with low Ks values reflecting formation of denser fibrin networks had higher rate of ischemic stroke and major bleeding.

Why is it important?

This study is the first to show that unfavorable fibrin determines in part the efficacy and safety of anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonists in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Perspectives

This study suggests that fbrin clot permeability measurement is promising test in patients with atrial fibrillation on VKA that may improve safety of the therapy.
