What is it about?

This article provides and overview of Denmark's policy towards the European Union (EU). It argues that historically Denmark's EU policy has been pragmatic and functionalist, seeking primarily to utilize EU membership to secure the economic sustainability of the welfare state. However, Danish EU policy is increasingly characterized by dualism allowing for simultaneous protection against political integration and uploading of Danish interests to the EU level.

Why is it important?

The EU is changing as a response to economic and demographic challenges, Russia's war in Ukraine and changes in US foreign policy. To understand these changes, we need to understand the role of small activist states like Denmark.

Perspectives

As a Danish and Nordic citizen, I think it is important to understand the role of small European welfare states in a changing political environment in Europe.
