What is it about?

A detailed, in-depth, full (as far as we can tell) consideration of a popular, easy-to-do experiment. Sliding two fingers under a long stick to find its centre of mass seems simple but presents some surprising difficulties and turns out to be much more fine-detailed than it seems at first glance.

Why is it important?

This paper shows the intricate nature of some "mundane" phenomena. It is very edifying to see how intricate some seemingly simple processes can be.

Perspectives

One of the most personally important papers in my growth as a researcher and educator. The first "OK, but how exactly..." question we asked opened a rabbit hole that turned out to be quite deep. The publication process was also quite educational for q young scientist, because the initially submitted paper was nowhere near as good as the finished article but with a good referee and supportive editor we improved it substantially. Very gratifying!
