Why is it important?
The results obtained in this study confirm the suspected presence of insecticides in waters and fish from Milazzo Gulf, which may lead to a considerable hazard to humans. This study confirms the relevant advantages of the biomarker approach on fish species in the ecotoxicological evaluation of marine environments.
Perspectives
Extensive application of pesticides in the agricultural field implies that fish accumulate various fold higher concentrations of chemical residues than the surrounding water in the aquatic environment because of the bioaccumulation phenomenon. Organophosphates (OPs) are one of the groups of insecticides more widely used in agriculture. These compounds provoke high neurotoxicity on non-target organisms, such as fish that may absorb them by epidermis, gill epithelium, and digestive system.
