What is it about?

Distichopora violacea is one of the few species of Stylasteridae of Maldives. In our work, we provide the distribution of this species in four atolls (North Malè, South Malè, Felidhoo and Ari), underlying significant differences in its distribution between ocean and lagoon reefs, eastern and western atolls, and between ocean reefs of the eastern atolls.

Why is it important?

Stylasterids have been widely studied from a taxonomic point of view, but field studies providing quantitative data are still scant. The present investigation provides new insights on the stylasterid Distichopora violacea and, for the first time, quantitative data on its distribution and density, that can be useful for conservation and management of this CITES regulated species.

Perspectives

Writing this article gave me the possibility to face for the first time with the scientific community and allowed me to work with very competent researcher. I hope, our work will help to rise the interest on stylasterids and on the biodiversity of tropical reefs, encouraging people to preserve their incredible richness.
