What is it about?
Despite the positive effects of sports participation on young girls‘ development and well-being, gender disparities persist, and sport participation drops dramatically as young girls grow into adolescence. The purpose of the study was to examine the role of socializing agents on dropout and continuing participation of adolescent girls in masculine-typed sports (MTS).

Why is it important?
Adolescent girls receive messages from the society that it is inappropriate for females to engage in MTS, and that girls are incompatible to engage in MTS. As a result of these messages, a girl might suppress her wishes to be active and follow gender roles. Preventing experiences based on gender roles reduces girls' options, providing them with fewer opportunities to discover their interests and talents.
