What is it about?

Israeli policy toward the Syrian war - which initially saw Israel as a “passive onlooker” then as a “good neighbor,” and, more recently, as a declared rival against the Iranian presence in Syria requires explanation. Its organizing principle combines humanitarian and military activity: building bridges on the one hand, and maximizing Israeli interests on the other. In addition, “humanitarian diplomacy”—the civilian and government assistance provided in the Syrian Golan Heights area—will be addressed and its role in the efforts to build a set of common interests between Israel and Syrian opposition groups will be explored. Finally, we need to understand the challenges and opportunities facing Israel, in light of the rapidly shifting situation across its northeastern border.

Why is it important?

There are very few efforts to explore and analyze Israel's angle in regard to the Syrian war. Israel - who became increasingly more active in the Syrian arena should be examined in terms of its intentions, conduct and actions which influence some of the Syrian realities across its boarder.

Perspectives

As someone who had spent the last decade working at the Syrian arena and working with Syrian colleagues to foster cross boarder partnerships, I hope that that you will find this analysis useful and as an attempt to provide a broader overview on the different dimensions involving Israeli actions.
