What is it about?

In this article, I relate my experiences dancing in the final days of the Bella Lewitzky Dance Company, examine Lewitzky’s professional relationship with Lester Horton, and discuss aspects of Lewitzky’s technique. I end by describing how Lewitzky’s legacy is extended through my teaching practice and call for a renewed examination of her career and contributions to the dance field.

Why is it important?

Bella Lewitzky is often overshadowed by Lester Horton's name, erasing the contribution she made to the creation of the Horton technique. She worked with Horton 15 years developing the technique and learning how to teach it to others.

Perspectives

When I hear speak of Lewitzky as being the body of Horton, I feel angry. The woman that I knew was not just a piece of clay that Horton molded, she possessed an articulate mind and body. She was a collaborator; not an object being told what to do.
