What is it about?

In this article, we analyse the state of the energy service in the most remote areas of Colombia, those not connected to the national electricity grid. We used data analysis tools to better understand the coverage, quality, and challenges faced by these communities. Our aim was to present a clear picture of the situation so that authorities, companies, and organisations can make more informed decisions and improve access to energy in places where it remains a daily challenge.

Why is it important?

This research is important because it sheds light on the reality of energy access in Colombia’s most remote and underserved regions, where the lack of connection to the national grid limits social and economic opportunities. What makes it unique is the use of business intelligence tools to process and interpret large sets of open data, allowing us to move beyond isolated reports and build a comprehensive, data driven view of the problem. By combining advanced analytics with a focus on accessibility and practical application, this work offers decision-makers a clear and actionable resource to design more effective strategies, ensuring that solutions are not only technically sound but also tailored to the needs of the communities they aim to serve.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a truly enriching experience because it allowed me to connect technical data analysis with a human reality that is often invisible in national energy discussions. Working with my co-authors to transform complex datasets into clear, meaningful insights reinforced my belief that data can be a powerful tool for social change. For me, the most rewarding aspect was knowing that our findings could help guide concrete actions to bring reliable energy to communities that have been excluded from the grid for decades. I hope this work inspires others to look beyond the numbers and see the people whose lives can be transformed by inclusive and sustainable energy solutions.
